Multimedia Mise-en-scene Project

In class we were asked to do what is called a Multimedia Mise-en-scene project.

The goals of this project were to create an interactive media station that can immerse viewers into a certain characters world. Our main goals were to make the setting of this character abundantly clear and give a lot of information about their style and personality. We also created a mood board to showcase our character and lastly we created a video with audio to showcase our everyday life for the character.

Our character was this woman caller Rhia Wilders who is always seeking adventure and might be confronted with unwanted chaos. In our station we had one computer with the video of her in the jungle and stumbling to a tomb. In another computer we has her moodboard showcasing her style and vibe. Lastly was a computer showing the settings, which were her tent where she sleeps, the jungle and the tomb she ran into.

When creating annd representing our character our group used the process of selection to choose what exactly we wanted her to look like and wear. We also particularly choose a monkey to be her companion or “sidekick” which a big stereotype around adventurers in many movies. Our group’s process was that we each had a task to create this station. We first all brainstormed what exactly we wanted Rhia to look like and first things first was creating the avatar and then building of that to create the rest of her life.

Here is a picture of Rhias’s avatar we created

Lastly i inserted the link to the drive where the whole project is.

We love adventure films!

The adventure genre is  focused on exploration and quest narratives, often featuring a heroic protagonist that goes on a journey that leads to self-discovery and personal growth. These films typically involve locations such as jungles, mountains, or even outer space. Throughout the film the character is usually faced with multiple conflicts, including physical dangers and battling to defeat an antagonist. Common themes include courage, perseverance, and the triumph of good over evil, often depicted through the protagonist's relationships with companions who assist them on their journey. The narratives may also incorporate mythical or fantastical elements to develop the story.

Production techniques in adventure films are designed to enhance the excitement and immersion of the viewer. Dynamic camera work, including establishing shots, showcases the setting. Special effects, bring fantastical elements to life, while loud  and immersive sounds contributes to the emotional aspect. Fast-paced editing during action sequences using tracking shots keeps audiences engaged.

Marketing for adventure films often emphasizes thrilling action and breathtaking visuals. Trailers showcase suspenseful sequences and feature the protagonist in dynamic poses against scenic backdrops. Taglines showcase the adventure aspect, such as "Adventure awaits!" or "Journey into the unknown!" are common. Additionally, merchandise tied to the film, such as toys and clothing, as well as engaging social media campaigns, help to draw audiences into the adventure.

Two strong adventure films  are Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark showcases the archeologist Indian Jones as he goes through the journey of  racing against Nazi agents to find the Ark of the Covenant, immersive adventure through thrilling action sequences and exotic locations. The film utilizes special effects and dynamic cinematography to elevate the sense of adventure. Similarly, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring adapts J.R.R. Tolkien's epic tale of a quest to destroy a powerful ring. Featuring a diverse cast of characters and stunning landscapes, it showcases key adventure characteristics while exploring themes of friendship and sacrifice, appealing to both fantasy and adventure fans.

Other notable films in the adventure genre include Jurassic ParkPirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black PearlThe GooniesMad Max: Fury RoadAvatarThe Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and The Adventures of Tintin. Each of these films exemplifies the thrilling, immersive qualities that define the adventure genre, captivating audiences with their narratives and production techniques.

Sound Projects

In class we learnt about sound techniques. We learnt about how movies use sound and create sound for their films through editing. We learnt about foley which is a way to make sound effects through filming yourself make noises which different objects.

After we learnt about this, we were asked to do 2 different sound projects.

In Sound Project #1 we were asked to create a soundscape of an event that can occur in 2 minutes. Me and my partner chose fishing and catching a big fish. We also had to utilize 4 foley sounds in the project. We brainstormed with making an outline which helped choosing which sounds we would do foley and which we would find sound effects online and what order everything would occur. We used ClipChamp as our editing resource. I think we did a good job on when making the foley sounds (example footsteps on a boat) i think t sounded really realistic and worked well cohesively throughout the project. I think we could have chosen a better scenario for the sound projects cause i think it would have been better made which a different event.

In Sound Project #2 we were asked to create a soundscape for our One word film project. We had to create sounds using as many foley as we wanted and as many online sounds as we wanted but it had to be realistic and match up our OWF project. Similarly as Sound Project #1 we brainstormed and utilized an outline to choose what we do foley and what we do online and the order of all the sounds. We also used ClipChamp as our editing resource. I think one thing we did well was time the foot steps when we did them in foley so when watching the video it would match up perfectly. In the other hand, i think we could have done a better job at emphasizing a difference between my footsteps and the stalkers footsteps.
